If there’s one thing you absolutely MUST do as a copywriter, it’s learn how to boost your productivity.
Think about it.
If you’re making $5,000 per project and can do 2 projects per month, you’re pretty much capped at $10,000 per month.
But what if you learned how to boost your productivity and double it? Well, you’ve just doubled your income.
And yes…it REALLY is that simple. Boost your productivity and you’ll boost your income. I’ve done it, and many other copywriters have done it.
So let me tell you what I believe to be the biggest productivity booster I’ve ever come across…
The 50/50/30 technique
The 50/50/30 technique is simple.
You work for a 50 minute block, then a 10 minute break.
Another 50 minute block, 10 minute break.
Then a final 50 minute block, and a 30 minute break.
But there’s one little caveat.
During the 50 minutes you’re working, you can do NOTHING else but work.
No phone, no email, no talking to your animals, nothing. Just stare at the screen and pound away at the keyboard.
Then during your 10 or 30 minute breaks, you do nothing but relax. Get your mind completely off the subject of “workâ€. You might do the laundry, read a book (non-business), get a quick bite to eat, or anything else that relaxes you.
What I’ve found is that I can literally get as much work done in the first few hours of the day as I used to get done working all day long.
This is something you definitely have to get used to, so don’t expect to be able to do this all day long everyday. You’ll have to gradually build into it because you’re simply not used to it and it’s going to be a big change.
I personally started off with 1 per day, now I usually do 2 or 3. Each block is 3 hours, 20 minutes and if you do 2 of them you’ll be doing a total of only 5 hours of work.
However, that 5 hours of work is PURE work and you’ll get more done (usually about double) in those 5 hours of pure hard work than you did in probably 2 days before doing this, and you’re still working only 7 hours instead of 8.
And obviously if you want to keep working, go ahead. There’s no set guideline for this…just do what you can.
Why This Works So Well
There are actually 2 reasons this technique works so well.
The first reason this technique works so well is because we’re kind of taking advantage of our natural energy systems.
Your body has a natural cycle of energy that lasts for roughly 50 minutes, dips down for a few minutes, then goes back up high for another 50 minutes or so. So by taking advantage of this you’re already going to get more work done.
It might not make a HUGE difference, but everything helps. Nobody likes to work when they’re tired or unfocused, and as a copywriter it’s pretty much pointless because your creativity depends on energy – so you have to stay energetic at all times!
The second reason this technique works like a charm is simply because when we get distracted, it takes an average of 20 minutes to get back on task to what we were doing. So essentially if you get distracted just once every 20 minutes, you’re going to get almost nothing done for the day.
By blocking out 50 minutes of time each day you won’t allow yourself to get distracted and you’ll be able to focus your energy much better.
So today’s task is to do 1 round of this.
As I said, don’t start out trying to do 3 or 4 rounds of this because you probably won’t be able to do it. It’s kind of like eating healthier or quitting smoking. You can’t just jump from one lifestyle to the other, you need to ease yourself into it for the maximum and most long-lasting effect.
But I urge you to try it out. This is one of the most powerful productivity boosters I’ve ever come across.
Remember….
Work 50 minutes, 10 minute break.
Work 50 minutes, 10 minute break.
Work 50 minutes, 30 minute break.
